It is house in a rugged magnesium frame body, which gives it a bit more heft than most prosumer level cameras on the market. Before the D90, there was the Nikon D80. The D80 is in Nikon Dxx "prosumer" line, which means it is quite feature rich while still remaining within range of many hobbyists budgets. While the features of the D80 are probably overkill for those just looking to step up to a DSLR, the D80 is a great option for those serious hobbyists who can appreciate features like the built in wireless CLS (creative lighting system) flash control.
Since the D80 is now an older model, you can get some great prices on this still great camera. If you're looking for a backup for your D90, or simply a feature rich first camera at a great price, give the D80 a look.
